3 Ways Becoming a Mom Has Drawn Me Closer to God

3 Ways Becoming a Mom Has Drawn Me Closer to GodAsk any mom to name the most significant event of her life, and chances are she will say the birth of her child.

This is certainly the case for me, as having my son has changed every single aspect of my life, from my schedule to my priorities to my relationship with God.

Need proof? Here are three specific ways becoming a mom has improved my relationship with the Lord.

I have a better understanding of God’s all-encompassing love for us.

The moment my son was born, I felt like my heart quadrupled in size, and I knew I was catching a glimpse of just how strong God’s love is for you and me.

My baby didn’t have to do anything to earn my love—indeed, he could have cried for hours on end and not slept through the night for years, and it wouldn’t have changed my dedication to him one bit (though the bags under my eyes would have been quite a sight!).

The point is, if I love my son that much with my human, imperfect love, how incredibly great must the Father’s perfect love be for us! I’m overwhelmed with gratitude at the thought of it!

1 John 4:16 (NLT) We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

I’m honoring my own mother in new and unexpected ways.

Too often we hear the commandment to honor our father and mother and think it applies solely to children. We use it as a clever discipline tactic with our youngsters but don’t abide by it as adults.

Being a parent is serious stuff—we moms are raising and molding the next generation, no matter how old our children are—and God understands that.

Becoming a mom myself has fostered within me a deep and profound respect for my mother. Thinking about everything she did for me—the sacrifices, the protection, the letting go—makes me want to honor her more than I ever did before.

Exodus 20:12 (NLT) Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

I’m learning what it really means to trust God completely.

I never thought I would have what they call “mama bear” tendencies, but the moment my son was born I felt the strongest urge to protect him, no matter what. And protect him I do, to the extent that I can.

But one day, Lord willing, he will go to school, then move out of my house, then have children of his own. I cannot keep him in a bubble, so instead I give him to God, over and over and over again. Tweet this!

Psalm 9:10 (NLT) Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Oh Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.

How has becoming a mom affected your faith or spirituality?

  1. Great insights here, Katie! Like you, being a mom has taught me so much about God’s love for us. I don’t think there’s any experience that gives a better glimpse of that. Being a mom has also shown me the importance of free will. No matter how much God loves me, He cannot force me to love him back (though I do!) and I’ve begun to get a glimpse of the fact that I cannot control my children’s decisions. I can enforce consequences, etc. but they have to learn some things on their own. Thanks for sharing this!

  2. Pretty awesome perspective. I’m not sure if it got me closer to my faith. I’ve gotten confused over time and it doesn’t help that my kids are both Jewish and Christian. Sometimes I don’t know which exactly to choose, so we do both. It’s complicated but it makes me think a lot more about it.

  3. I definitely feel closer to God and had no idea of the instant, amazing, radiating love you feel as a mom. My birth experiences were very scary, but the moment I became a mom- it was less about me and more about him (them)

  4. YES! Oh how I know this… and I thank GOD that I can entrust my kids to Him and feel the peace in knowing He is taking care of them, and they are in HIS hands. I don’t know how parents do it without that assurance… I can do as much as a mom can do- and that is never enough to keep them safe. Oh, how I give them to Him over and over again…

    Beautiful post Katie!!!

  5. Beautiful! Made me tear up as I read this 🙂 I think God has given me so much more patience as a mom. I am still getting there, believe me, but I’ve been worked on so much in this area.

  6. My spouse and I stumbled over here by a different
page and thought I may as well check things out.
I like what I see so i am just following you.

Look forward to checking out your web page yet again.

  7. Totally agree with your blog. I value it as one of the most delicate and the most trusted relationship that one can ever experience. I have see how mothers respond to their child needs unconditionally. When there is unconditional love, it is but Divine.
