Thank you to Portrait Innovations for sponsoring this content. Lots of people consider spring their favorite season of the year, and understandably so. The emerging flowers, the warmer temps, and the longer days tend to leave us feeling bright and energizedโready for new beginnings and open to new possibilities.
All that excitement makes spring the perfect time to get some updated family photos.
Last week I headed to my local Portrait Innovations studio for some spring-themed portraits of my two kids. Here’s how we made the most of our photo sessionโand how you can capture the joy of this season in your own family portraits.
Think spring in your color palette.
One of the most distinct aspects of the spring season is its lovely colors. When choosing your outfit, take a cue from those beautiful blooms popping up all around you. Spring is a great time to go a little brighterโeither head-to-toe or with cheerful pops to accompany your neutrals. Think bright pinks, greens, and yellowsโor even the orange/coral color we went with here.
My preschool-aged son wore a more muted checkered shirt that also had a hint of the coral color.
Of course, if bright isn’t your thing, spring is also a great time for soft pastels.
Play with springtime props.
I am in love with this photo of my toddler daughter with the flower prop. A perfect way to capture spring!
We also brought along her beloved bunny rabbit, which she held onto for most of the photo session. It worked out perfectly because not only was it a great spring-themed prop, but it also provided her some comfort in a new situation.
Our photographer also snapped this adorable photo of my son in a newsboy cap. So fun!
Take advantage of amazing deals.
Spring is a great time for portraits not only because of the lovely colors and the fun propsโbut also because of the awesome savings for your wallet!

The contest ends on Sunday, April 30, with winners announced on May 8.
One last thing. If you’re worried your kiddo won’t smile perfectly during the photo session, don’t. Leave your inner perfectionist at the door, and let the professional photographers at Portrait Innovations do what they do best.
Based on this shot, would you believe that my toddler was running around the whole time, refusing to sit where we asked her to (in other words, being a toddler!)? It certainly didn’t stop us from getting a gorgeous photo of her! (This one is going on our wall!)
Meanwhile, this little guy was just hamming it up. ๐
And in the end? Many of the “less than perfect” shots are some of my very favorites because their personalities really shine through. <3

Looks like a great spring photography session. I like that the poses look natural and your tips to use props is a great one too.
Aw so adorable. My son no longer likes photos. At 17 he avoids the camera as much as possible. I miss this age so much.
Easter is a great time for family photos. For one, I love the colors. The props are clever. Beautiful flowers. Yes to discounts for this service.
These are so precious. Summer is my favorite time of year for photos!
We are way behind with family portraits and need to schedule this soon. My grandson is graduating from high school this year and opted out of portraits but this Grandma wants some! Great idea.
Oh, these are precious! I wish I had done more of this when my kids were younger. Really good tips for great pics.

Your littles are super cute! I love the flowers and the fence shot. We had one of these near us and it closed. Bummer!
Your pictures turned out adorable! We just got spring portraits done at PI too. Love it!
Ah, they are the cutest kids! I love doing pictures with my family in spring, the outfit color options are so cheery! Now that my kids are older they fight me to have pictures taken. But I know it is worth it and always force them to do it.
Fall is my favorite time of year for photos! I love all the colors. Sprig is still all muddy here in NY.
Oh, those photos are adorable! It can be very challenging to get family portraits taken – I wouldn’t swear we ever had a good one!
These are such beautiful photos Katie. And I absolutely LOVE the Spring theme ๐

Lots of cute pictures. I bet it was hard to pick a favorite. I can’t wait to do pictures with my family.
